Myofascial Release - SEO Case Study

Week 2

A quick recap:

1. Site:
Scott van Niekerk’s Wholistic Physical Therapy site which is a Myofascial Release Treatment Center.

2. Goal:
Page 1 rankings on Google.com for the term Myofascial Release

3. SEO Tools:
Wordtracker : Google’s Keyword Tool : iBusinessPromoter (IBP) : Google Analytics

So we are now into the first step of the SEO process - Keyword Analysis for Myofascial Release.

A caveat before we start…….
Like all SEO tools I would say that you need to use them together with other tools to give you more comprehensive or accurate research data as sometimes the numbers between tools seem to contradict each other. So that why we’ll be using both Wordtracker & the Google Keyword Tool.

First off is Wordtracker…..
Wordtracker is pretty good at giving you some ideas for niche terms and specific numbers for keyword phrases but then again their data is only a subset of the full picture as they only contain some of the main metacrawlers. So within the Keyword Universe tool you can enter a term - Myofascial Release - and it comes back with a whole bunch of ‘related’ terms which you can then select and then see how many searches where performed on those terms over the last 110 days and then see the competitiveness of these terms with something which they call the KEI which stands for Keyword Effectiveness Index. All this really means is the number of searches divided by the number of web pages that has that term on them. The higher the score the better. There have been some comments about the accuracy or rather the usefulness of this by some internet marketing ‘gurus’ such as John Reese of Traffic Secrets fame. So as mentioned above this gives you some indication but I wouldn’t bet your life on it.

They also give you an estimated number of searches per day but again this is based on market share of the search market….so again you need to be careful.

One thing which I would also point out is that you can’t split you data between US & UK on the Keyword Universe tool but you can do this when using another of Wordtracker’s tools called Keyword Researcher.

Ok….enough of all the blah blah…here’s a snippit of the top 14 phrases ordered by number of searches - courtesy of Wordtracker!

So there you have ’some’ Wordtracker data. You should have a play around with the data to see what terms you want to go after and to ensure that:

1. There is either enough traffic to make it worthwhile or

2. There isn’t much competition or

3. Hopefully both 1 & 2 above!

OK, so then off to Google’s Keyword Tool.
Google, as part of it’s “world domination” is slowly opening up more & more info in some of these tools so for instance in this Keyword Tool they are now providing monthly search volumes which is fairly new. Although they are a bit ‘ball parkey’ you can’t get much better than from the horses mouth! Downside is that they don’t show the the competitor numbers but you could just check this by doing the exact search to see what Google displays.

Enter you term - myofascial release - and ensure ‘use synonyms’ is ticked. Also don’t forget to select you region/country. NB! - The data below is for the UK.

This is what you get:

So as you can see from the above the terms are sorted by RELEVANCE! In other words if Google sees a number of these combinations of words on a page if starts getting the picture that it’s about ‘myofascial release’.

Now, just as important if you scroll down in the search results you should see the next section: Additional keywords to be considered - again sorted by RELEVANCE! Mega important - you need to use these words to paint a picture for Google gently telling them what your site is about.

SEO Case Study - Myofascial Release

Week1

Overview

Site Summary

I have started this case study to show how you can get a page 1 rank on Google for a competitive medical term such as “myofascial release“. The site I’ll be using is Scott van Niekerk’s Wholistic Physical Therapy site which is a Myofascial Release Treatment Center, located in Brewster, New York.

Tools

In this case study I will be using the following tools:

1. For Keyword Research I’ll be using Wordtracker & Google’s Keyword Tool

2. For SEO analyis, linking partners, submission & promotion I’ll be using iBusinessPromoter (IBP)

3. For site usage analysis & tracking I’ll be using Google Analytics

SEO Process Overview

I like to follow the structured 3 step process below:

• Optimise Keyword analysis – based on the keywords provided by Scott I’ll analyse the potential search traffic volume and the competitiveness of these terms and suggest other niche phrases.
  
  Optimise content – re-write the site content, based on the above analysis, to ensure that they contain all the required ‘on-page elements’ needed for good rankings.

• Promote Reciprocal & one-way linking – work to get inbound links from industry specific, partner and supplier sites using specific keywords.

  Directory & search engine submissions – submit to the main directories and search engines (50+).

• Track Google Analytics – To provide a method of tracking your site usage. Such as numbers of users, pages viewed, location of users, sources of traffic etc. Without this you CANNOT improve!

So first things first…..

Where is Scott’s site currently ranking for the term Myofascial Release on Google.com?

Today, the 3rd October 2008 it’s sitting on page 4 in position 36 (see Myofascial Release Google search result below).

Are You Doing What You Love?

I’m taking a break today from the Internet Marketing world to reflect on a true story below which is from the heart of Africa. It has extra meaning in that my Dad was the doctor that arrived at the scene but it was too late…..

We can all learn something from this!

I hear people refer to Work Life Balance as if work was one thing and life another. This is nothing short of a tragedy. I hear comments about it being Monday, and about holidays all being too short. I see people spending huge tracts of their income on their sports and hobbies if they have them, and then working their backsides off to spend a few precious minutes doing what they would really prefer to be doing.

Recently I was up on the Limpopo River riding my bicycle in the bush on an event called the Tour de Kruger. My fifteen year old daughter was with me, gamely pedaling her way through the sand and stones of this pristine part of the word. We were surrounded by the bush, and every day we saw elephants and other wonderful animals and birds. We were surrounded by friends, mostly smiling and laughing through the sweat.

I met Paul Grobler. He was the guide of the group in which my daughter was cycling, a 40 year old professional walking and cycling guide in Mashatu. On the first day Paul stopped his group and asked them if they had heard the Pearl Spotted Owl. He had just heard it call. They were mostly from Joburg so they shook their heads in the negative. Paul then cupped his hands and imitated a perfect replica of the call. Within minutes the owl arrived in a nearby tree, no doubt very confused by Paul’s featherless appearance , and the impressed tourists bust out their cameras and snapped away.

After the second day I joined Paul and a small group in a jaunt across the Limpopo pools to the Zimbabwe side. He was enthralled with absolutely everything he saw, and he bustled around us making sure that we did not miss any details and the best view of the sunset.

I bumped into Paul in the pitch dark at five thirty the next morning, and asked him how his night had been. He told me that he had not slept well, but that he had heard the lions roaring at two thirty. He had climbed out of his tent and sat outside listening to their conversation, and had just watched the stars. Then Paul told me that the stars were the brightest he had ever seen them in his life. In fact he could not believe how bright the stars were that night. He was excited about them.

Shortly after 8 o’clock that same morning Paul fell off his bicycle stone dead.

He had suffered a fatal heart attack. Nothing that his companions (including my young daughter) did brought him back to life, and nor could the doctors who were on the scene within fifteen minutes.
We were all shocked at the suddenness and the finality of it all. We felt that awful sick feeling in the pits of our stomachs. It was a tragedy.

I was comforting my young daughter who had been right there, and she turned to me and said, “You know Dad, he was doing what he loved and he was exactly where he wanted to be. I think he is now one of those stars he loved so much.”

I wonder how many of us could say that?

I wonder which tragedy is greater?

The tragedy that so many of us don’t even know what we really love doing, and then if we do, that so many of us lack the courage to do what we really love doing, or the tragedy that a happy, fulfilled young teacher (for that is what Paul really was), died doing exactly what he loved, and that he had spent his life following his passion.

The other point to ponder is that it took a young grieving teenager to see this so absolutely clearly and remind her ostensibly wise father of the real priorities in life and death.

Using Social Marketing For Massive Traffic

You know how important traffic is to the life of your website?

Of course you do.

So how about I share with you some of the best ways to get traffic coming into your site using those “social marketing” sites that everyone’s talking about?

WHAT IS SOCIAL MARKETING?

This is how Wikipedia defines it:

“Social marketing is the systematic application of marketing along with other concepts and techniques to achieve specific behavioral goals for a social good.

Although ’social marketing’ is sometimes seen only as using standard commercial marketing practices to achieve non-commercial goals, this is an over-simplification.

The primary aim of ’social marketing’ is ’social good’, while in ‘commercial marketing’ the aim is primarily ‘financial’. This does not mean that commercial marketers can not contribute to achievement of social good.

Increasingly, social marketing is being described as having ‘two parents’ - a ’social parent’ = social sciences and social policy, and a ‘marketing parent’ = commercial and public sector marketing approaches.”

Some people call it social networking, web 2.0 or new age marketing but the fact of the matter is this - you need to be using the social marketing websites to your advantage because there’s tons of free traffic to be had from them…..if you know what you are doing.

The big names like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and the rest are not only dominating news stories now and people’s minds but they are also starting to play a really big part in driving traffic to marketers pages online. The problem though is this:

social sites don’t like marketers! It’s true!

So you have to be careful when you are using them that you don’t get banned or caught out.

The key is to adopt this simple “4 H’s” approach;

• Humor
• Honesty
• Have fun
• Help people

So it’s important to remember that it’s the RELATIONSHIPS first and business second!

As long as you can inject a little piece of humor into your social marketing profile or even just a little piece of who you really are then you will start attracting lots of friends and widening your network.

You also need to maintain an honest and transparent approach throughout. No point uploading photos to your profile of P Diddy or Pamela Anderson pretending they’re your mates. People want to get to know you so be honest.

Have fun! That’s one of the great things about social marketing is that you can have lots of fun doing it. Meeting new people, learning new stuff and making money from the traffic that you get from it all at the same time….but be careful not to waste too much time which is very easy to do on these types of sites.

Also remember to help people. The more you can help people the more they will help you in return. So add useful links and recommendations to your profiles. Point people in the right direction and answer any questions people post on your profile or contact you with.

Farnborough International Airshow

Taking a little break from the norm of the internet world to let you know about a really cool event in the South East of England - The Farnborough International Airshow 2008.

This year the Farnborough International Airshow will take place from 14th to 20th July.

2008 marks a double anniversary celebration in the UK aviation calendar. The Farnborough International Airshow will celebrate its diamond anniversary, marking 60 successful years at the Farnborough Aerodrome. It will also be 100 years since Samuel Franklin Cody made the first successful sustained, powered flight in the UK from Farnborough Airfield on 16 October 1908. In recognition of these important events we are planning our own celebrations which will be incorporated into the Farnborough International Airshow 2008.

Burnt by PPC now onto Facebook Marketing

OK…..so in the last blog post I had it all figured out?!

Simply get the ads right, pay for the traffic & things will convert……

If only it was that easy. A few major pieces have finally clicked within my brain:

• This is not going to be quick & easy
• You need to do the time & effort before trying to steam ahead
• Relationship first - build trust & then…& only them maybe try & sell something.

So, I pulled the Google ads I had been running & have decided to take a step back. First off I need to create some squeeze pages where I can capture a lead’s details by possibly giving away some free content such as Rich Schefren & the other gurus do, set up the auto-responder sequence & maybe by the 5-7 email contact try & see if the trust is such that they are willing to buy.

What was interesting is that I had ads in different markets. One in the parenting arena & another in the social networking / Facebook area. I was amazed at the differences in traffic. The Facebook traffic was HUGE!!

The social networking sites are obviously the latest & greatest topic among the top boys and after having a look about & connecting with a lady by the name of Mari Smith who was recommended by a friend. She has a great training product out on ‘How to use Facebook to strategically grow your business‘.

Targeted Vs Untargeted Traffic

Ok…..so I have been trying to get some traffic to one of the products [ Affiliate Training ] but think I could be wasting my time as the traffic I am getting is coming from some of the community sites that we run - see the links to the right - & although this is free traffic it’s VERY untargeted….hence the frustration & minimal conversion.

The good thing is that I have done some more Pay Per Click training with some of Michael Cheney’s stuff & think I may also look into the Perry Marshall AdWord’s course which I believe is supposed to be pretty good. Then tomorrow I’ll start some PPC campaigns via Google Adwords & hopefully with the right keywords & good ads I’ll get targeted traffic which should convert at a better rate.

The only good thing is that my Adsense is ticking over & at least that is bringing in enough to cover the child care costs!
